£7m investment for Portico in one of its Portsmouth Cargo Terminals

Posted date:

“y hosting this event we hope to sow the seed to decision makers in our industry of what is possible at Portsmouth. Opening up Albert Johnson Quay not only means we can handle cargo more efficiently, it gives scope to introduce cargo types we have not been able to work with before, such as high and heavy machinery. The 17,000m2 area provides capacity to handle multiple types of cargo at the same time.”

On February 11, 2026, Portico proudly showcased the ongoing redevelopment of the cargo terminal in Portsmouth to current and prospective customers and partners. The event highlighted the site's potential, with completion expected in Autumn 2026.

This development creates opportunities to expand cargo handling services and attract new business.

Guests were transported on two buses and given a tour of Portsmouth's seven-berth port, which emphasised the available growth opportunities. Following the tour, the Portico team presented the advantages of partnering with Portico.

The current phase of the project has involved demolishing an outdated warehouse and levelling the area to create additional reinforced quayside space, increasing cargo handling and the ability to attract new business.

Simon Clarke, Commercial & Communications Director said “By hosting this event we hope to sow the seed to decision makers in our industry of what is possible at Portsmouth. Opening up Albert Johnson Quay not only means we can handle cargo more efficiently, it gives scope to introduce cargo types we have not been able to work with before, such as high and heavy machinery. The 17,000m2 area provides capacity to handle multiple types of cargo at the same time.

Richard Lewis, Managing Director added “Portico has a reputation for handling cargos efficiently and providing excellent customer service. We continue to invest in our site to ensure the service we provide is what the maritime sector needs for the future, and we are grateful to those who took the time to visit us on Wednesday”.

Portico remains the UK market leader for banana imports and has a growing cargo portfolio, which includes containerisation, aggregates, agribulks, project cargo and general ad hoc cargo. More recently it has expanded its specialist services, with the launch of Portico Logistics, a customs agency, freight forwarding, transport and warehousing division and also Portico Port Services, which provides first-class staff to the cruise, ferry, cargo and ports industries.
